Here's what a regular "music class" might look like at school. If you'd like to copy it, great! If you want to find your own way to do things, that's great too! Try to aim for at least 30 minutes of "music time" a week. Remember: your schedule doesn't have to be the same as this! Listening, dancing, singing, drumming - these are all great musical activities you can do everyday!
1. Listening (3-5 minutes): Now's the chance for parents/guardians to introduce some music from their childhood, and vice versa. What you listen to doesn't really matter, what's important is that you listen carefully! Listen for a minute or two and think of some descriptive words - start simple, then get more complicated. Fast/slow? Happy/sad? Exciting/relaxing? Then make some personal connections - what memories does this music make you think of? Does this song tell a story? Talk about it with your family. Then sing along! Dance along! Drum along! Air guitar along!
2. Literacy Exercise (5-8 minutes): Find some flashcards (or make your own), or play a game that requires reading either rhythms or notes. Check here for some resources, play a game of face-off, keep a steady beat, check out a music website, anything that uses your musical skills!
3. Music Game (5-8 minutes): Get moving! Play a game that involves movement of some form - freeze dance, follow the leader, four corners, or turn the lights off and have a flashlight dance party! Whatever gets you moving to end the "class"!
