Listen and Respond

Percy Grainger: Children's March (Over the Hills and Far Away)

St. Andrews students: Try and imagine the familiar chime of St. Andrews school bell... "Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum..."

When Mr. Led hears this bell, it always reminds him of this song by composer Percy Grainger. Listen to the first two minutes (or, if you'd like, try and listen through the entire thing!), and answer the questions below. You can write down your answers, or discuss with a family member.

Grade 1

Consider the following word pairs: which word from each pair best describes the part of the song you listened to?

Slow/Fast            Heavy/Light           Gentle/Rough           Bouncy/Smooth

Happy/Sad            Joyous/Sorrowful           Relaxed/Excited           Carefree/Worrying

Keep going!: Ask yourself, why did you choose each word? Are there other words not listed here that describe what you heard? Are there different parts of the piece where both words in a pair would work?

Grade 2-3

Consider the title, “Children’s March (Over the Hills and Far Away)”. Imagine this piece of music is the soundtrack to a movie. Write a short description of what you imagine happening in the movie while this music is playing.

Keep going!: Once the song is over, what happens next? Instead of writing it down, try creating the next part of the story with music. Use household objects as instruments, or create something digitally!
