Listen and Respond

Daft Punk - Alive 2007

DJs create music by mixing together two or more songs that already exist, using a combination of computers and turntables, which play the music off records. Daft Punk is an example of a DJ.

Listen to this part of Daft Punk’s live concert, Alive 2007. This one portion of the live show contains three different songs:

Television Rules the Nation, Around the World, and Crescendolls.

Try drawing a map of this song. Draw a long empty bar across a page, with the start of the recording at one end and the end of the recording at the other. Mark each minute mark with a short line (see below for an example).

Now assign each of the three songs a colour. When you hear one song, colour the bar up until the moment you don't hear it anymore. If you hear two songs at once, mix two colours together. Keep going until the entire bar is filled. Add a legend for which colour represents each song.

Keep going!: Use incredibox or you.dj to try mixing two songs together on your own. Try listening to each song separately, then combine them together your own way.

CONTENT WARNING: You.dj pulls song recommendations directly from soundcloud, and these recommendations constantly changing. These songs may not be appropriate for all ages. Parental supervision is required for this site.
